Delta to fiddle with international routes

Delta Airlines is one of the best known names in international travel.  It might not be the most recognized brand name in the world in terms of airlines, but it is certainly the largest.  And their recent takeover of Northwest Airlines has only made their market share in the world all the more impressive.  They are one of the biggest providers of premium flights in the world and while Delta Airlines is going to be adding 15 new airline routes to their roster next year, it is at the moment unknown whether they will actually increase their overall operating capacity outside of the United States of America.

In fact, it is quite possible that their overall international capacity may decrease.  Delta Airlines, like many of the other international air carriers, has been forced not only to increase ticket prices and add fees into the mix in order to stay afloat, but they have also been involved in cutting a large part of their domestic US service and even enforcing minimum stopovers in certain cases in an attempt to get people to travel by air less and by other methods more.  Their domestic service underwent a significant cut in 2008 and it is expected that their international service will undergo a smaller cut in 2009.  While they are adding the new routes, they are also taking service away from other routes rather than adding to their fleet and for this reason Delta Airlines in 2009 will internationally very likely have a smaller fleet covering more ground.
