Wi-Fi hits United Airlines

Although some airports are already offering Wi-Fi, people who fly with United Airlines will be happy to find out that they will soon be offering Wi-Fi for all of their premium flights. This is great for business travellers who need to work on the plane. Now you will be able to use things like your Blackberries, iPhones, and laptops on the plane.

Such airlines like Delta Airlines and American Airlines have been searching for safe internet service that they can use during flights for some time now. Since they have now found it, you would expect United Airlines to put it on their flights. However, they are only offering it on certain premium flights right now.

They say that they might be willing to put it on other flights if passengers are willing to pay an extra $12.95 per ticket to use it. Although this may seem like a lot, most business men are more than happy to pay the extra money to be able to use the internet on the plane.

Of course, United Airlines is not the only company that has found an answer to internet on planes. In fact, other companies, like Southwest and JetBlue, are now starting to roll out satellite based internet for their flights. At the end of 2008 there were only 50 planes that were wired for Wi-Fi. However, they expect to have about 2,000 wired for Wi-Fi by the end of 2010.

Not everyone is going to want to use this service. United Airlines notes that only people who are on long flights are going to be willing to pay the extra money for this service. Thus, these services are only available on cross country flights for now.
